Students Celebrate the Arts
During the annual Winter Art and Music Festival, Saint David’s students presented their accomplishments in art and music to the community. The Winter Art Show displayed student artwork from the first trimester of art, shop, and pottery. The halls and stairways of the school became a fine arts gallery, featuring line and color studies, winter snowscapes, Chinese lanterns, ceramic masks, and life-size Egyptian Mummy cases, among other types of art. Musical events included the Fifth Grade Musicale, Winter Concert, Lower School Mozart Assembly and, for the first time, Saint David’s Philharmonic Ensemble performed at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, with a group of other school orchestras. Billed as A Festival of Orchestras, the concert featured performances by student orchestras from Dalton, Saint David’s, Brearley, Collegiate, and Rudolf Steiner High School. The event was conceived three years ago by Maria Zimmerman, Director of Music at Brearley, as a way to present a joint concert of middle schools in New York City in a professional setting. The Saint David’s Philharmonic Ensemble, under the direction of Philip Hough, performed works by George Frederick Handel, Gustav Holst, and Rheinhold Gliere. The participating schools hope to make this joint concert an annual or biennial event.
