A Walk in the Park
The Fifth Grade study of ecosystems regularly brought the boys out to Central Park where they made close observations , sketches , and biological surveys . In pairs , they selected their own 1 meter x 1 meter square of the park , and observed how it changed as the weather warmed after winter .
Guided by their teachers , Mr . Hardie and Mr . Woolford , the boys learned to slow down , look closely , and appreciate the interconnectedness of living and nonliving elements of an ecosystem .
Recess !
With East 89th Street closed to traffic from 10 a . m . to 2 p . m . each day , boys enjoyed time outdoors in spring where they played games , burned some energy , and stayed active in between classes .
