AROUND CAMPUS

Mapping it Out

Over a series of sessions conducted by an educator from the New-York Historical Society and the boys ’ classroom teachers , first graders examined maps and mapping tools from the past and present . As a culminating project , the class partners with the New-York Historical Society ( this year on Zoom ) for six weeks to learn , through mapmaking , about how the island of Manhattan has changed over time . The boys studied Manhattan , when the Lenape Native Americans inhabited the island . They then time-traveled to the 1600s when the Dutch arrived and called Manhattan New Amsterdam ; and ended with a focus on the present day . Each section of the boys ’ maps depicts these time periods throughout history . This is one of several grades for which the school partners with the New-York Historical Society .

Knights of Saint David ’ s

King O ’ Halloran had the honor of dubbing each of our third graders a Knight of Saint David ’ s on June 4 , 2021 . This Saint David ’ s tradition marks the boys ’ acceptance of their call to be leaders — to be all that they can be — as they prepare to transition to the Upper School . The Knights prepare for this ceremony through interdisciplinary study of medieval times : its traditions , customs , symbols . The boys design their own Coats of Arms , which reflect the insignia and symbols of the middle ages .
