Robert H. Renner’ 58 and his wife, Joan, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August. Bob also turned 75, to be the oldest graduate of Saint David’ s School. To celebrate these events, they took a two-week vacation to Alaska via ship and train. Aboard the ship Island Princess, they visited the towns of Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway. Then it was on to the Princess rail line to view Mount McKinley and the wilderness of Denali National Park. The trip concluded in Fairbanks with a cruise on a Sternwheeler and panning for $ 38 worth of gold.
William J. Stevens’ 58 writes,“ I was just reflecting on my notorious classmates of’ 58, and their wonderful accomplishments. There was an article at one time in the Saint David’ s Magazine that mentioned my rodeo background, and may have shown a rodeo photo of me. Close as I can figure, I’ m probably the only graduate of Saint David’ s School that is a Life Gold Card Member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. I rode bulls for the Texas A & M University Rodeo Team, and turned pro while working on my Master’ s Degree in’ 71, and my Gold Card in’ 91. I competed in Pro Rodeos in thirteen states and 68 cities. I did all of that while holding down positions with Cargill, and Hoffmann-La Roche Pharmaceutical. Pretty good stunt if you ask me. I’ m retired from the arena now at the ripe old age of 73, and am currently a professional Western artist. I definitely took a different turn in the road than most, if not all, Saint David’ s grads. You can check my website at, www. walkinsgallery. com. I’ m the crazy one in the herd. I look forward to reuniting with my fellow grads next May, if the good Lord is willing, and the creek don’ t rise, as they say.”
Gray Currier’ 60 writes of his visit to Saint David’ s in September 2017:“ Thanks for your kind hospitality when Mary Jean and I visited. It was a wonderful stroll down Memory Lane! If I had stayed at Saint David’ s, I believe I would have graduated from Eighth Grade in the spring of 1960. David Hume was Headmaster during my entire time there. I remember him as a kind, friendly, soft-spoken, tall, very handsome man. As I look back now, he must have been a very young man, too! I always felt very much at home at Saint David’ s, and I think we all, students and faculty alike, were excited to be part of such a new undertaking. I particularly remember singing“ America the Beautiful”— or at least its first stanza— every morning, and it remains perhaps my favorite hymn. I believe I was at Saint David’ s through Second Grade. I was sorry to leave, but I was enrolled at the Buckley School in Third Grade and graduated from Eighth Grade at Buckley in 1960. It was a pleasure to see the old school again. I was amazed to see its expansion toward Madison Avenue, considering the physical obstacles that that growth has had to overcome. Clearly, Saint David’ s has come a long way in the last 60-plus years.”
