Leymah Gbowee Chapel Talk
for 7th and 8th Graders
Nobel Laureate and Founder of the Gbowee Peace
Foundation, Leymah Gbowee, gave a Chapel talk for our
seventh and eighth graders in September. Both classes of boys
had participated when in Grade Six in the GPF’s Backpack
Initiative, which provides backpacks and supplies to high
achieving Liberian students in need.
Ms. Gbowee thanked the boys for their efforts in support
of GPF. She showed where in Liberia the boys’ backpacks and
letters were distributed, and the network of young volunteers
involved in the process. She also asked for the boys’ prayers
ahead of her address to the UN General Assembly about
sustainability goals, raising peace builders, ending extreme
poverty, and providing increased opportunities for girls.
Ms. Gbowee expressed her hope that some of the boys will
continue to volunteer for the organization in the years ahead
as she expands the initiative to Ghana.

Thanksgiving Food Drive
Saint David’s boys participated in the school-wide
Thanksgiving Food Drive, a longstanding school social
action project. Throughout November, boys and families
donated canned goods and non-perishable food items. The
eighth graders led the drive, collecting the items and selling
holiday pies to finance the purchase of turkeys. On the day
before Thanksgiving the grocery baskets assembled by the
eighth graders were donated to Msgr. Leonard’s (R.I.P.)
previous parish, Incarnation; the Lion of Judah Assembly,
sponsored by staff member Stanley Livingston; and Bethel
Community Church, sponsored by staff member Will Best.
