From your MP
Kemi Badenoch, MP for Saffron
Walden, spent the parliamentary
Easter recess with local police units
across the constituency. On a mission
to learn more about local policing
and witness the challenges they face
fi rst-hand, Mrs. Badenoch took part in
vehicle patrols, foot patrols, case fi le
reviews and a multi-agency operation
on a travellers site.
Having attended multiple call-outs
with the police units, she was able
to see how recent policy changes
were taking effect on the ground. The
increasing need for police offi cers
to deal with mental health issues
was most prominent, with offi cers
estimating that these incidents
sometimes comprise up to 50% of
their workload.
Contents
New initiatives like triage cars have
recently been introduced as a way of
reducing this workload and allowing
mental health issues to be dealt with
by mental health professionals.

“Working with the offi cers on the
ground was an invaluable experience
and highlighted just how complex
their jobs have become in recent
years as we deal with new types of
crime. It’s more important than ever
that Uttlesford receives the boost in
policing it has long deserved.” said
Mrs Badenoch.
“I’m delighted to hear that Essex
Police are currently training 150 new
offi cers, following my push for an
increase in the precept with Police,
Fire and Crime Commissioner Roger
Hirst, and the senior leadership of
Essex Police. I am particularly pleased
that the Operational Support Group
of offi cers alone is being boosted by
25 offi cers. They carry out a lot of
good work in our area and support
our community and patrol teams. I
will continue to work hard for this
community to ensure that we receive
our fair share of police.”
Mrs. Badenoch also commented on her
observations of how people use the
police service and treat offi cers:
“I was shocked at the number of
instances we had while sirens were on,
of drivers refusing to move out of the
way of police cars. Some even gave
us dirty looks as we overtook them to
take a 999 call. A lot of precious police
time is also being wasted on issues
like neighbour disputes that are best
dealt with by the council’s Community
Safety Partnership. They are an
excellent service staffed by ex-police
offi cers and other local agencies and
can deal with minor incidents of anti-
social behaviour. Uttlesford residents
can contact them on 01799 510 555.”
The police support Badenoch’s ‘Report
It!’ campaign and reiterated how
critical it was to report all crime, no
matter how minor. An accurate picture
of what’s happening locally provides
intelligence and ensures communities
are allocated enough offi cers. If you
do witness or fall victim to any form
of crime you can contact 101 for
non-emergencies. You can also report
online at www.essex.police.uk or
www.crimestoppers-uk.org
