Short term exchange to Joyce Frankland Academy Newport
The final exchange between the 9 schools involved in the Erasmus KA2 project ‘ how to live study and work in a foreign EU country , took place at the academy during the 15-20th April .
Arriving on the 15th April , 33 students and 17 teachers from Aguilar De Campoo – Spain , The Basque Country- Spain , Estonia , Finland , Rovigo – Italy , Netherlands , Poland and Sicily - Italy were met at the airport at various times during the day by their host families for the week who then showed them around the area and in some cases took them to Audley End or Cambridge .
Some of the activities they were involved in during the exchange included :
On the 17th April our guests visited Stansted aerozone where they were informed about the economic importance of the airport to the region in which the academy is sited and what it was like to work at the airport through the eyes of Border Force who explained their work and importance not only to the airport but across the whole UK . This was a most insightful visit which ended
with the party watching several planes landing and taking off from the viewing station .
On the 19th April they visited Anglia Ruskin University and Cambridge University who had put together programmes explaining what these universities could offer international students who came to study with them . In the afternoon , the party moved on to Astra Zeneca . This involved lectures , hand on demonstrations , short films and presentations by Erasmus students who now work at the company . This was a most fascinating visit as those working at the company demonstrated what the company did and how it went about looking for new medicines to combat disease . It was certainly a visit that inspired many of the visiting students who were seeking a vocation in life working in this area of employment .
International Coordinator Graham Hesketh who oversaw the organisation of this event said “ this event was only made possible because of the efforts of our hosting families and students who made our guests feel very much at home . I would also like to say a big thank you to my colleagues from the academy who contributed to the week as well as institutions like Astra Zeneca , Stansted Airport , Cambridge University , Cambridge Regional College and Anglia Ruskin University who went out of

Some would think it ’ s as simple as trying something while closing your eyes but the difference is ; you can open your eyes again . their way to organise activities for the visiting group . Furthermore , I would like to thank Kemi Badenoch MP for coming to the academy and participating in our seminar alongside William Hall and Dr Marie Orr as well as Alex Fuller for organising our visit to the Palace of Westminster . Without their help this exchange would not have been as successful as it was .”

It is estimated that only 1 in 5 people with sight loss are registered , which is just over 7,000 people in Essex . This means there are approximately 28,000 unregistered people in Essex living with sight loss . Many of those would be unsupported to cope with the devastating effects , such as depression , social isolation or a huge decline of independence .
Our charity provides information , support and advice to people with sight loss , to support them to remain independent www . support4sight . org . uk
