A local artist with an
international reputation
features in a new
exhibition at the Fry Art
Gallery, Saffron Walden,
running from May 27th
to September 3rd.
Sustained Invention shows
highlights from the career of Michael
Rothenstein, an artist whose work
stretches from watercolour landscapes
to pop art prints that are as bold as
anything from London or New York.
Rothenstein was elected as a Senior
Member of the Royal Academy in 1984
and his work is held by the Museum
of Modern Art in New York and the
National Gallery of Australia, as well
as the Victoria and Albert Museum and
Tate. The Fry Gallery’s collection is,
however, exceptional, with 350 works
in various media. A number of gifts
were made by the artist to the Gallery
before his death in 1993, whilst
between 2015 and 2016 his widow,
the late Mrs Sam Rothenstein, gave
a substantial donation of work from
Michael’s studio. These generous gifts
are at the heart of the new exhibition.
Michael Rothenstein was one of the
artists at the centre of the highly
creative village of Great Bardfi eld
in North West Essex, which saw the
fl owering of the work of Eric Ravilious
and Edward Bawden among others.
Michael was a radical and innovative
printmaker who spent time at the
famous “Atelier 17” studio in Paris.
He believed “you could print with
anything you could coat with ink” and
his use of materials for relief prints
and constructions was never restricted,
encompassing metal and wood as well
as objects found in the area around
him. Unlike many, however, he seemed
to get more determined to experiment
as he got older and in the late 1960s
and 1970s explored the combination
of woodcuts and linocuts with
photographs. One constant, though,
was a fascination with the image of a
crowing cockerel, loud and proud.
Many Images using these innovations
will be on display in the exhibition but
there will also be earlier work relating
to the landscape and the English Neo-
Romantic period in watercolour and
ink. An associated illustrated book,
“Rothenstein at the Fry”, with text
by Gill Saunders, senior curator at the
Victoria and Albert Museum, will be
launched at the opening of the show
and will be available to buy at the
Gallery.
Continuing alongside Sustained
Invention is the Fry Art Gallery’s
exhibition Exploring: Inspirational
places for Great Bardfi eld and North
West Essex Artists. This includes
paintings, drawings and prints by
artists such as Bawden and Ravilious,
as well as John Aldridge, John
Bellany, Sheila Robinson and others.
Inspiration comes from places as
varied as Sicily, Istanbul, Cornwall and,
of course, Essex.
The gallery is open from the fi rst
Sunday in April to the last Sunday
in October on the following days:
Monday and Wednesday - closed;
Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 2-5pm;
Saturday 11am-5pm, Sunday and Bank
Holidays 2.15-5pm.
It is free of charge.
