PUBLIC MEETING SUMMARY
OVERVIEW
The second Safe Streets Arlington Public Meeting was conducted on Thursday , May 16 , 2024 , at the George W . Hawkes Downtown Library . The meeting was promoted through social media posts , email , and flyers in English , Spanish , and Vietnamese . In addition , Spanish and Vietnamese translators were on hand to assist with any requested interpretive services during the meeting .
Shortly after 6 pm , the project team provided a presentation and divided the room into five teams . For their break-out sessions , participants were asked to address the following items : high-injury network data , strategies and actions , and countermeasures .
MEETING PRESENTATION
Introduction and Agenda City of Arlington Planning and Programming Manager Ann Foss kicked oV the meeting by introducing the project team . She reviewed the agenda , which included a review of the progress since the last public meeting , a review of the vision statement and safety data , a review of strategies and actions , a discussion of safety countermeasures , and a wrap up session . Next , Ann touched on the project timeline by stating that the project team is nearing the halfway point of the project and that a full report is expected to be finalized by the end of 2024 . The next public meeting is scheduled for September 2024 .
Ann reviewed the project ’ s progress to date :
• Briefings to Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council
• Development of safety vision and strategies
• Preparation of safety data dashboard
• Review of top contributing factors to crashes
• Development of public survey
She stated that the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council have been briefed on the project and provided the following feedback :
• General support for improving safety and reducing fatal / serious injury crashes in Arlington
• Main concerns : high speeds , distracted driving , street design
• Requests : o Continued focus on traVic enforcement o Increased education for children on safety principles o Redundancy in street design to make roadways safer o Understanding safety at railroad crossings o Exploring crash data on TxDOT roadways compared to City roadways
