How to ...
4 . Carefully remove the disc cartridge from the housing and rinse off all the organic particles adhering to the exterior of the disc stack .
5 . Unscrew the end of the disc spine in order to loosen the discs . Do not remove the discs from the stack 6 . Rinse off all the particles adhering to the grooves in the disc face 7 . Do not scrape or use a stiff brush to clean the grooves , as it may lead to damage of the disc face which will severely compromise the efficiency of the filter
8 . If a high pressure water jet is used , ensure that the discs do not spin as this could cause severe damage to the groove structures .
9 . After cleaning , retighten the cap on the end of the stack . Do not over-tighten 10 . Place the O-ring in its housing and lubricate with a suitable lubricant 11 . Carefully place the filter housing back into position , ensuring that the o-ring is not pinched and re-tighten the clamp . If the housing has a threaded connection , ensure that the threads are not cross threaded and hand-tighten . Again ensure that the O-ring is seated correctly and not “ pinched ” in any way .
Cleaning of water formed deposits
The above procedure describes the process to remove organic particles from the disc stack , however deposits of biological or inorganic material may also be encrusted on the disc surface , thereby clogging the grooves . This water formed encrustation may be broadly classified as either biological or manganese , iron and carbonate deposits . Each has their own set of instructions and specific chemicals and acid solutions to remove the deposits . Obtain the full procedures from the filter supplier , with particular reference to the health and safety requirements of using highly corrosive chemicals and the safe disposal of contaminated water after the process has been completed .
HOW TO DISMANTLE AND PREPARE A DISC FILTER FOR CLEANING
The following is a step by step procedure to prepare the disc cartridge for cleaning . The example used is the manual 2 ” Arkal dual filter .
Step 1 : Drain all water from the filter ff
Open the plug or valve at the base of the filter
Step 3 : Carefully remove the filter spine / ring assembly
Step 4 : Un-screw the grey base of the spine to loosen the filter rings ff
Do not remove the rings from the spine for the removal of organic material ff
Only remove the rings from the spine if they need chemical treatment to remove inorganic residue . Thereafter follow the formal procedure for chemical treatment available from the filter supplier
Step 5 : Clean the filter rings as described above Step 6 : Re-tighten the grey spine base to compress the rings
Step 7 : Place the O-ring on the filter housing with the holes facing upward ff
Lightly lubricate the O-ring with a silicon based lubricant , such as Molycote 111 before replacing the filter housing
Step 8 : Reinsert the filter spine / ring assembly into the body of the filter and carefully push the filter housing over the O-ring
Step 2 : Remove the clamp holding the body of the filter and remove the filter housing
Step 9 : Complete the assembly by positioning and snapping the clamp over the filter housing and return to service ff Take care not to damage the O-ring
