StudentLife STUDENT LIFE By James McNaueal A s I write this, we have officially reached the halfway point of the semester. I would be lying if I said that it’s all smooth sailing from here, because for most of us the next month and a half will be a cluster-mess of projects, reports, and finals. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel: a light that is more commonly referred to as Winter Break! Until then, our Student Life team is here to make sure there are plenty of ways for you to get away from your studies, unwind, and have a good time. We have had enormous success with our events to date; so much so that we’ve decided to double our efforts for the month of November. Not only will our monthly Coffee House and Movie Night be taking place, we have some events lined up that are sure to be great times for everyone involved (Amazing Race SLC, Grocery Bingo, and 8 SA Voice November 2013 Fear Factor, to name a few)! Many of our events will be in support of Movember and our SLC Food Drive, so be sure to get your spare change and non-perishable food items ready to donate. Already this semester we have had roughly 20 events targeting different interest groups throughout the college. The level of engagement from students this year has been unparalleled. Orientation was the best it’s ever been, and each event we host is better than the last! Every now and then I hear people complain about how student life at our college “isn’t this” or “isn’t that”. The truth is, Student life at our college is getting better every day, and the people to thank for that are the people who come out to our events and give us feedback. We have a capable team, but we aren’t mind readers. If you have ideas about the kinds of events we should run, please, by all means, tell us! What a lot of people don’t know is that a fair amount of work goes into bringing these events to life. Behind the scenes, our Student Life team, made up of myself and eight Student Life Officers from different schools within the college, invest hours into ideation, preparation, and execution – all for your sake! And don’t forget, we’re full-time students too. This is more than a job for us: it’s a passion. The greatest reward you can give us is showing up and having a good time. Mind you, a smile and thank you go a long way too! Connect with me! Twitter: @jmcnaueal www.savoiceslc.com/organize-an-event Student Association of St. Lawrence College | www.SAvoiceSLC.com
