Kingston Gems By Samira Hriech H ello lovely students of St. Lawrence College Kingston Campus. My name is Samira and I am a first-year student here at the college, this is however, not my first year in Kingston. I do know that for many of you Kingston is an entirely new place and that you might not know what places are worth trying. What I want to do here is tell you about great locally owned restaurants where you can go and make your own memories of Kingston. Kingston has a really great pub scene. A particular favourite of mine is The Mansion. It’s a great pub that serves more than just the average pub food. It’s located on Princess Street just east of the hub so it feels cozy. The Mansion is a family business that is co-owned by two brothers who have been involved in restaurants in Kingston since they were kids. Will and Casey Fisher grew up working in restaurants for their father and eventually decided to make one of their own. The Mansion is located just outside the hub of Kingston at 506 Princess Street The Mansion has a great and affordable menu. There are the usual appetizers, mains, and salads but most notable is the $8.95 lunch menu which consists of a variety of hearty main course meals with a delicious home cooked feel. There’s their delicious variation on mac and cheese or lasagna as well as the unique scarecrow sandwich. It’s a filling and entirely meatless sandwich for all those vegetarians out there. Besides the menu there are different daily specials offered all through the week, like the daily curry, and $2.00 Taco Tuesdays! The best part of the menu is that it is served all night every night until 2:00am! The food is affordable and it’s great quality, perfect for the average broke student. The fries are hand cut and the tortilla chips are fried in house. The restaurant is locally owned and they also try to support local businesses and farmers by purchasing as many ingredients from local businesses as possible. They even grow their own herbs at the restaurant. They purchase their meat fresh from a local farmer in Glenburnie, www.SAvoiceSLC.com | Student Association of St. Lawrence College and a lot of ingredients from the local grocer, John’s, across the road. While food is a very important aspect of a restaurant experience it isn’t the only one. The Mansion is equipped with big screen HD TVs where you can catch all the best sports action in a relaxed environment where the staff are all friendly and helpful. If sports aren’t your thing they also have a great live music scene. There’s live music almost everyday from both local, and touring artists. Are you a musician trying to catch a break in the music scene? Try attending the open mic night! They might even hire you to come back. All in all the Mansion is a great local restaurant to try out. It’s a welcoming environment for students, which is great if you miss home. There are affordable and delicious food and drink specials all the time. You’ll be full and happy without having to empty your pockets and you won’t have to go far for a home cooked meal. November 2013 SA Voice 7
