ingston Municipal Electoral
districts have not been up for
review since amalgamation
of the new City of Kingston since 1998.
New districts were needed to better reflect
the growth in population for the city. In
April 2013, Kingston City Council voted
to eliminate Sydenham district, where the
majority of Queen’s University students
live, and divide the population between
Williamsville and King’s Town wards. This
change is happening because Council has
decided not to recognize post-secondary
students towards the population of these
districts. Some Councilor’s have claimed
that “Students don’t vote and don’t need
representation” or because some Councilor’s
suggested that students were “transients” or
had no attachment to the city.
The Alma Mater Society of Queen’s
University, Sydenham District Association
and Kevin Wiener (Queen’s Law Student)
filed an appeal with the Ontario Municipal
Board. The Student Association of St.
Lawrence College Board of Directors decided
to support the parties’ position by being a
participant in the appeal.
