TOURISM & ECONOMIC GROWTH
combines training with practical placements, international exposure, financial literacy, business skills and leadership development. That matters. Training somebody for a career is a different economic proposition from simply employing someone during construction. The longer-term test will be on how many local employees move into supervisory and management positions, how many build lasting hospitality careers, and whether those skills eventually circulate through the broader North Coast economy.
Benefits beyond the resort? There have already been claims of broader social benefit. Oelofse says a 60 % reduction in crime during construction was reported, attributed to increased employment and renewed hope, though he flags this as an observation, not a verified statistic.
KwaDukuza Municipality is confident Club Med ' s influence will extend further. Zulu describes it as a catalytic development rather than a self-contained enclave, pointing to employment, skills development, supplier opportunities and infrastructure investment as evidence the impact already extends beyond the resort ' s boundaries, with longer-term benefits expected in tourism, supply chains and rates revenue.
“ The longer-term test will be on how many local employees move into supervisory and management positions...”
The iLembe Chamber is more cautious. Oelofse says it ' s too early for a definitive assessment; while businesses are showing interest, the Chamber hasn ' t seen a surge in membership or enquiries. " A resort of this nature initially has a very concentrated economic footprint," he says. That could change: if guests begin booking independent excursions or using local operators, money that might stay inside the resort starts circulating through the wider economy. That ' s the multiplier effect the North Coast will want to see. Club Med says it expects visitor volumes and the convention centre to stimulate demand across transport, tourism experiences and hospitality. The potential is there; how much materialises is the question.
The property test Earlier this year, Stefan Botha of Rainmaker Marketing put Club Med’ s Exclusive Collection villas at close to R12 million a suite, nearly three times the going rate for comparable non-Club Med product in the corridor.
