Play area of the private school in Fleurhof.
“ All of the people who have been living in squatter camps around here [ Fleurhof ] have been moved into RDP houses. They’ ve been given full sectional title units,” says project manager, Adrian Ford. Remaining squatters will be moved and placed upon completion of other units.
A few local businesses have sprouted, slowly industrialising the area. Fleurhof has four mixed use business centres, seven crèches, five religious sites, one community centre, three schools and 20 to 30 parks. There are plans to build a shopping centre with the country’ s biggest chains operating from it.
National Student Financial Aid Scheme( NSFAS) chairperson and social entrepreneur, Sizwe Nxasana, has opened a private school in the area set to sculpt the leaders of tomorrow. The Future Nation Schools model is based on the project-based learning approach which is
aimed at getting learners to design, plan and execute extended projects by applying the theory they learn to solve real world problems. Nxasana says that the model also has a strong focus on cultivating personal and people leadership capabilities and entrepreneurship.
Manda Nkuhlu executive director at Calgro M3, says that the housing issue is about changing historic lives and lifestyles of people.“ When you build a house you build a community, little villages. You provide a way of life, through building a way that families can integrate with people and families around them. You try to build them in such a way that the convenience of schools, healthcare and places of work and transport are close-by,” he says.“ Affordable housing involves integrating different options, different households, different incomes and different people.”
