Convenience and affordability : the best of both worlds

While formal housing has grown by 50 % since 1994 with 5.6 million formal homes already built , an additional 1.5 million housing opportunities need to be created by 2019 to meet government commitments .

Over R250-billion will be made available for housing during this period including affordable bonded housing investments by banks , rental accommodation developments by the private sector and agencies , and government subsidies and housing investments by large employers and mining companies .

BUILDING AN ENTIRE TOWNSHIP
Fleurhof , located in the south west of Johannesburg , is a mixed housing development covering 440ha in Johannesburg ’ s Region C property developer , Calgro M3 , together with the government are in the process of building affordable housing projects to assist with the government housing backlog of about 2.1 million subsidised houses .
It is one of the largest integrated housing developments in Gauteng . With over 9 000 dwellings that comprise RDP houses , social or rental housing units and bonded houses – the main aim of the development is to establish a truly integrated residential area . A total of 4 633 units have already been completed and allocated to beneficiaries . The remaining units are at different stages of construction .
Citizens have been moved into some of the completed developments . The City of Johannesburg has moved in 48 families from the 1996 / 97 housing waiting list . An additional 52 units will also be allocated to beneficiaries .
