TRY The most valuable way to obtain points in rugby. A try is scored when a player grounds the ball in the opposition’s ingoal area. It earns the team five points, AND CONVERSION and if it is converted, two additional points are obtained. DROPPED FOULS GOAL PENALTY A dropped goal occurs when an attacking player drops the ball on the ground and kicks it once it bounces. The ball also has to go above the crossbar and between the opposition goalposts. This earns the team three points. Penalty kicks and free kicks are awarded to the nonoffending team for infringements by their opponents. It is worth three points. KEY RUGBY TERMS Line-out Ruck Scrum A ruck is a phase of play where one or more players from each team, who are on their feet, in physical contact, close around the ball on the ground. The purpose of the lineout is to restart play, quickly, safely and fairly, after the ball has gone into touch, with a throw in between two lines of players. Maul A maul begins when a player carrying the ball is held by one or more opponents, and one or more of the ball carrier’s team mates bind on the ball carrier. A scrum is formed in the field of play when eight players from each team, bound together in three rows for each team, close up with their opponents so that the heads of the front rows are interlocked.
