Open Badges are Here! by Tom Wood I have recently been sitting in on a number of open conference calls with some of the leading thought developers from around the world behind Mozilla’s new Open Badges and it has generated much excitement about the future of online e-learning badge rewards. Often the discussions are based around how badges can be used in education in the classroom or to help engage young people with their learning journeys, and I have been working on some concepts as to how they might apply to the business world. So far, I have seen some great work on using badges to support CVs and job applications – I know that a nicely designed CV with a collection of badges at the bottom would definitely catch my eye – but not a lot about how badges might be used as part of the internal appraisal process. It is the latter that I have started focusing on. The Current Scenario: At the moment, an individual employee is likely to keep records of their personal learning files and this might include the following: • Certificates of attendance for/ completion of face to face training • CPD Log • Certificates from online learning courses • Results print outs from online learning courses • Results from key regulatory knowledge assessments • Internal Training Log There is likely to be a lot of information here, if the employee has been keeping good records – but it is not uncommon for us to visit clients and pick up an employee’s learning file to find it either severely lacking in content or out of date and not having been updated since the previous year. Why? It takes time to collate all that information in one place and if you did, you might find you need a filing cabinet for each member of staff. Imagine checking through all of that at appraisal. So, what happens when it comes to appraisal ?F?P??V?&W"?b7Ffb?BF?V?"7WW'f?6?"F?67W72??F?Rv??@???B&B?F???w2F?BF?W?F?BF?B?V#??( ??( ??( ??( ??( ??( ?????&?fVBFV?W???R6????0???&?fVB6?W0?6???WFVBG&????r??D4`?GFV?FVB??7FW&6?70?&VGV6VB6?????G0??V?VBv?F?G&????r?b??GV7FVP??fW'?v??B?'WB?2F?B?C??Bv?W&R?2F?R&??c?F???P?v?BF?v??Bv?VV?F?Bf???r6&??WB????s????r??v??R?F?B??W"f?&?v2W6??rF?R?$T?4?2??W ??V&???r?B76W76?V?B?Ff?&??B??W"7FfbvW&P?v&FVB&FvW2f?"6???WF??r?W?F6?2?F?RV????VP?v?V?BV?vvR??&Rv?F?F?R?V&???r&?6W72?B&P?WF??F?6??&Wv&FVBv?F?&FvRv?V?F?W?76V@?6W'F??7&?FW&?6WB'?%t( ?2?V&???r&?fW76????2??v??R?bF?RV????VR??r'&?fVBBF?R&?6?v?F???V6R?bW"v?F?F?V?"&FvW2&??FVB?WC????FV?W???R6????26?W'6R&FvR( 2v&FVBF?F??6P?v???B7V66W76gV??6???WFVB?????R6?W'6R?@?76W76?V?@?"??6?W2G&????r&FvR( 2v&FVBF?F??6Rv???@?7V66W76gV??6???WFVB%t( ?2( ?6????B6?W0?G&????r6?W'6^( ??2??D4b&FvR( 2v&FVBF?F??6Rv???B7V66W76gV???6???WFVB%t( ?2D4b6?W'6R?B76W76?V?@?B????7FW&6?72&FvW2( 2v&FVBF?F??6Rv???GFV?FVB?%t??7FW&6?70?R????GV7F???&FvR( 27V66W76gV??76VBF?R????P???GV7F?????GV?R6?F?BF?W?6?V?B?V?G&???Wp?V????VW0?F?W6R&FvW2v?V?Bv?fRfW'?V?6?f?7V?Wf?FV?6RF?F?P?7WW'f?6?"?bv?Bv26??WfVBF?B?V"?'WBF?Bv6?( ?@????F?RV????VR?6?V&?VBF?Rf????v??r&FvW3??b?v??B?$T?4?&FvR( 2v&FVBF?F??6Rv???fP?6???WFVB?fW"S76W76?V?G2??F?R?$T?4??r???v?B?v?&FvR( 2v&FVBF?F??6Rv???fP?6???WFVB??GV?R???$T?4???F?RWfV???w2@????P????$T?4?W6W"?bF?R???F?&FvR( 2v&FVBF???P???F?f?GV?V6????F?'?F?R?$T?4?F????F?f?GV??v???2V?vvVBv?F?F?R????R?V&???r??W&?W???????W??V?FW&??r&FvR( 2v&FVBF?F??6Rv????fR6???WFVBF?R???W??V?FW&??r6?W'6R?@?76W76?V?B???5B&FvR( 2v&FVBF?F??6Rv???fR6???WFV@?R??W'25B????P?F?RV????VR?6?FV??2??RF?BF?W?&Rv?&???p?F?v&G2F?V?"7WW'f?6?"&FvR2F?W?v?BF?&V6??R?7WW'f?6?"??F?RgWGW&R??6??R?bF?W6R&FvW2v????fR&VV?V&?VB&V6W6RF?P?V????VR?2&VV?6?VBF?F?F?R??GV?W2?'WB6??R?`?F?W6R??F?6FRF?BF?RV????VR?2&V??V?vvV@???
