CHRIS READMAN , 71
I have been running for more than 50 years and have picked up numerous firsts , seconds and thirds in my age category , sometimes dicing to the line against formidable competition . I have run 13 sub-three-hour marathons , having set my PB ( 2:52 ) at a marathon in Stellenbosch in 1992 . These days , I enjoy coaching average Joes at the Green Point Athletics Track , helping them to improve and feel good about themselves . I am delighted when they appreciate my advice .

I got married in the afternoon , and my friend picked me up at 10:30pm , then drove me to the start of the Comrades . I still ran a decent race , but I would put that down to euphoria and sleep deprivation . I commentate at races because I have a big mouth , which allows me to spout a stream of conscious thought . Race participants may be battling with an injury , a weight-loss journey or trauma – so , if I can make their experience better , that is pure gold .
LUCAS ESTERHUYSE , 49
My ex-father-in-law did the Comrades 14 times , and I told him that one day I would do it too . The day before the race , I have steak and two beers – that I learned from him . In 2013 , a couple of women joined our club , whom we nicknamed the soccer mommies because their kids played soccer at Escombe Primary School . I helped them to qualify for the Comrades at the Hillcrest Marathon .
PAULA HUMPHREYS , 43
I ran my first 160km race this year and have completed several marathons , some during the lockdown around my garden . I prefer long-distance running because I consider it my therapy , an escape from work stress . I belong to Queensburgh Harriers , which my dad helped found .
