Wanderers Robert Sood of club sponsor Tile Merchant recently told Rugby Club Magazine about his positive connection with Wanderers FC. He said, “My initial introduction to the club was through my son Jamie who started in the Club’s mini section as a 6-year-old. I remember taking him along to the club and not knowing exactly what to expect finding it a little daunting. However, from the individuals organising the car park to the coaches and club officials I couldn’t have met a more down to earth bunch! Jamie, a direct and strong back row player usually at 6 or 7 who enjoyed getting stuck in, continued with the club to age 18 when regularly having to face recovery from concussion meant it was sensible to stop playing for the time being. Jamie also studied at Blackrock College and his brother Hugo, who plays for the U11s at Wanderers also attends there. Blackrock has also had a strong connection with the club over many years. The club has a great history emphasised by current Ireland internationals Max Deegan, in the back row and Jordan Larmour, as wing or full back, who played together in the Wanderers U12s. I can’t speak highly enough about Wanderers FC, their excellent coaches and members who have taken great care of both my boys over the years. My company Tile Merchant is a club sponsor and I enjoy supporting the club when asked. Congratulations to everyone at the club in their 150th season, a great achievement, and best of luck for the remainder of the 19/20 campaign!” Happy 150th to Wanderers F.C. from www.tilemerchant.ie IRELAND & U.K. DELIVERY 150th Anniversary “Both our 1st XV and women’s teams played a doubling header on the international pitch at Lansdowne Road against the oldest club in Ireland - Dublin University F.C. (Trinity) as a fixture of the oldest v the second oldest clubs in Ireland. This was followed by dinner in the Aviva Stadium. We also ran a hugely successful formal gala ball attended by 980 members on the 23 November 2019 at the Burlington Clayton hotel. Possibly the best function ever run by the club. We will complete our festivities with our club dinner on 24 March and a Captains dinner in a large marquee at our grounds at Merrion Road at the end of April.” Youth “Youth development is very important to us. We have teams at all age groups at youth level. However, the schools cup competitions are very strong here and we tend not to see the better players after under 14 as the schools confine their players Five Ireland internationals who were presented with a specially commissioned medal by the President of Wanderers , John Fitzpatrick, to acknowledge their achievement, as the Club celebrates its 150th Anniversary. Wally Bornemann (1960), Ronnie Kavanagh (1953) , Ronnie Dawson (1958), President, John Fitzpatrick, Michael Gibson (1964) and Frank Ennis (i979). to playing for the schools only. Our young players join the club as under 20’s and play in an under 20’s league. They become familiar with the senior and junior squad being included in training sessions with the squads. This also permits analysis of the players and their abilities and how they should transition into the various teams in the club.” www.rugbyclubmag.com 49
