Rugby Club Magazine recently caught up with Club Representative Liam McDermott to find out more about how they’ve been getting along lately. Atmosphere Liam told us, “The general mood in the club is excellent. The 1st XV is leading their league by one point but only 6 points separates the top four clubs who all meet each other in the next three weeks. Tight at the top here. I think the key to our success has been a new coaching team and successful recruitment over the past few seasons. The 2nd XV are second in their league whilst the 3rd XV are third. Our women’s XV, whilst still fairly new are competitive in their league.” 2020 “From a rugby point of view our aim now is to continue the improvement on the pitch and obtain We are here at all times, day or night, to provide excellence in funeral care through the quality, commitment and ethos of our team, when you and your family need it most. We missed out on promotion recently – losing in the promotion playoff and finishing 5th in recent seasons. Off the pitch we are in the process of applying for planning and building a new club house and all ancillary facilities. This is a project with three years to go to fruition – three years have already been spent getting to this stage.” Gus Nichols and his family have had a long and positive association with Wanderers Rugby Club. He recently told Rugby Club Magazine, “My early memories of Wanderers FC was accompanying my dad Eddie to the club as a child. My dad played hooker for the Wanderers and his claim to fame was competing successfully during a practice match against Ronnie Dawson the Ireland International hooker who also captained the British and Irish Lions!” “My own rugby days were mainly playing college rugby on the wing or as scrum half and my son Samuel has played for Wanderers minis in days gone by. Family and work commitments don’t allow me to get down to the club as often as I would like but it’s great to hear that they are celebrating their 150th anniversary and been chosen as Irish Club of the season! Our own business Nichols Funeral Directors have been around for over 200 years having been established in 1814 so fully appreciate the work that has been contributed by those who came before us. Myself and staff at Nichols would like to wish everyone at Wanderers FC the very best of continued success for the remainder of the 2019/2020 campaign and best wishes for the next 150 years!”
