They recently told us, “Our Predecessor Donald Rooke had supported the club for decades previously and we wanted to continue this. My uncle Max Turner who was involved with Devon RFU for many years, is a great club stalwart and my nephews Jack and Harry Taylor are part of the clubs mini/junior section. Okehampton is a very well run club who do an incredible amount of positive community work. Best wishes to everyone for the remainder of the season.” “I play for Newton Abbott Ladies having started playing - Started playing rugby as a 16-year-old as a prop and now play number 8. I hail from Okehampton and my partner David Crawford coaches our sons’ teams. Both lads are products of the club’s system starting in U7s as well as playing in their primary school. Youth rugby is a great producer of Senior rugby players. Conlead is in the U12s and Lachlann in the U14s and also plays for the Devon Development squad. The boys were influenced by both parents and would go and watch me play. When the boys started playing for Okehampton RFC they didn’t have a coach and so I stepped in with David and I splitting ourselves between our boy’s teams. Enjoying the sport is very important but structure and discipline are essential. The attributes offered by the sport of rugby are for life and this is spoken out of experience. Learning to win, lose and accept things as they are are important, however we will learn more from our losses and difficulties.” Clare Hooper 70 Issue 83 • •
