Deri FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/RUGBYCLUBMAG Ella Thomas from club sponsor Reflection Hair Salon recently told Rugby Club Magazine, “I played rugby at school and joined Deri Ladies U18s side as a winger with some of my friends a few seasons back. Unfortunately, I can’t play at the moment due to a knee injury but look forward to returning soon. Every time I watched the girls performing last season they seemed to be getting better and better. My mum, Emma Astley-Lewis, is a sponsor of the club and we like to help out when we can. I would like to wish everyone at the club all the best for next season!” “This season we started a ladies side called the Deri Diamonds who have successfully completed a full league fixture and continue to go from strength to strength. I must thank Kate Davies amongst others for her hard work in getting this off the ground. We also run a successful mini section (Mini Broncos) who have been running for a number of years now ably assisted by Matthew Cusack. “Our club is not just a club for the men’s senior side, we like to provide a warm, friendly place for all types of rugby whatever age and gender. We also have a local darts and pool side and run school disco’s and charity events for our community. “One of the biggest challenges we face are trying to run and maintain various sides as the WRU grant we receive is most welcome but it falls Nigel Williams of club sponsor SAS is delighted to be associated with Deri RFC, best wishes to everyone associated with the club for next season! 48 Issue 73 way short of paying all the costs associated with running these sides. We rely heavily on local sponsors and fund raising events at the club to help sustain this. “The other big challenge looming is our current building which we have been in for many years as it is actually owned by the local council. As all councils are feeling the financial squeeze the type of building we are in is an old miners welfare and the council is finding these type of buildings a financial nightmare to maintain so the future of our club house hangs in the balance “Our ambitions are to maintain and improve rugby in our community and provide a friendly and warm place to enjoy rugby on and off the field whilst hopefully making progress up the leagues.”
