T
he Autumn fixtures this year saw the Southern Hemisphere visit Europe and
after their dominance of last year’s World Cup the home nations certainly had
plenty to prove. Rugby Club Magazine takes a look at how each of them fared.
England
Ireland
The side’s progress under Eddie Jones has been
spectacular and despite a number of injuries England
performed confidently in all of their fixtures to
finish the year unbeaten. Their success to date has
been based around their ability to play a powerful
brand of clear thinking rugby and that was evident
over their Autumn matches.
To defeat Argentina after being reduced to
fourteen men was a fine achievement, with the
side being posed a different and perhaps welcome
challenge. The key now for England will be to
continue to build on their performances this year
in order to ensure this does not prove to be the
highpoint of their achievements.
Ireland’s historic victory over New Zealand
shocked the world of rugby and although they were
unable to repeat the feat at home, beating Australia
meant as well means that the team can reflect on a
successful month’s rugby.
The side has certainly progressed from their
performances in the Six Nations and talks of their
diminishing talent pool appear to be an exaggeration
with a number of young players emerging. Much
like England, the key now will be to make sure that
they use their positive results here as a springboard
to further development.
