Minety
the 1st and 2nd teams were excellent and with the 1st XV’s
winning streak, things couldn’t have been much better.”
Difficulties
“Sadly, the Christmas break and the terrible weather took
their toll. Despite a brave performance, the 1st XV crashed
out of the National Cup in a closely fought encounter with
Gosford All Blacks at the start of January and then the wet
weather prevented us from training or playing at home for
over a month.
Even with the best will in the world, there is only so much
you can do in a sports hall or, as happened on a number of
occasions, in the small club house bar, with all the tables and
chairs pushed back against the walls! Two league victories
followed but then we lost two matches to the weather and
then endured a nightmare spell of four consecutive losses as
our inability to train took hold.”
Positives
“With the improvement of the weather, we have returned
to something like our pre-Christmas form and we have
finished in 4th place in the Division. Our 2nd XV currently
sit in a respectable position in Dorset and Wilts Division 3
North, and have had a patchy season, but they have provided
a number of players when the 1st XV have been short through
injury or unavailability and have introduced new players to
the overall squad base.
We have all been delighted by the way that the two teams
have worked and trained together; we have a small playing
squad so such interaction is vital to our continued success.
Anthony Windle of principal club sponsor The Weighbridge
Brewhouse recently spoke to Rugby Club Magazine about
his positive association with Minety Rugby Club. He told
us, “Yes, it was really through my son’s Ashley and Thomas,
current 2nd row players, that I first became associated with
the club. The lads started around the age of 13 years of
age and are still there today as 23 and 21 year olds.
“This season just passed, I played tight head prop for a
few games when myself and some other 50 year olds
were asked to turn out to help the club when players were
needed. This is a positive reflection on the attitude the club
has amongst its members. Besides the terrible waterlogged
pitches last season the guys performed very well and for a
small village club we fight well above our weight.
“I feel we are good enough to compete in a higher division
and gain promotion and this surely has to be the ambition
of the club. With our new coach on board now and heads
looking forward I am sure we would pick up some additional
players if we made the step up.
