“Phoenix is situated in the middle of
two larger clubs, Slough RFC (whom we
beat in cup this year convincingly) and
Maidenhead RFC. We are without doubt
a community club but one that prides its
self on its social but also good level of
rugby.
It goes without saying that those that
walk through the Phoenix door normally
stay as a member for many years and even
if they move onward will always come
back and be welcomed at some point. The
club has grown from once being a pub
26 Issue 61
club to one that has excellent facilities in
its own ground. Though a club for local
community the extent of the clubs good
name does see players travelling in form
London, Reading and other areas to play
for them, and to add to that they gladly
pay for the privilege.”
Challenges/Ambitions
“In 5 years many things can change,
but the main thing for the club to uphold
is the way it is run. We have an excellent
committee both playing and general who
do sterling work, all volunteers. If you
keep the club stable at a decent level of
rugby, with a good youth section, with
a great social scene, then the club is
successful.
Our ambition is to get out of the
Championship, stabilise our position
in the next league and build steadily as
we are doing. We want to add to what
we have achieved this season whilst
maintaining the strong foundation laid
for the future. Our aims include gradually
increasing membership and to run maybe
3/4 teams regularly, keep the youth
section ticking over and to enhance sport
for locals would be fantastic.”
