The 2015-2016 so far has been a
revelation. Southam have added new
and more experienced players to both
its 1st and newly resurrected 2nd XV.
The changes aren’t just down to the
coaches. DoR Gary Gilkes and
1st XV manager Russ King
have improved the
organisation and
communication
between
the
players, coaching
staff, committee
and club members
which has not just
increased player numbers,
but attracted new supporters
and sponsors. This combined effort has
contributed to Friswell’s long-term goal
of changing the club’s fortune, attitude
and ambition.
At the time of writing, under the
captaincy of Will Grindal, Southam sit at
the top of Midlands West South 3 having
gone unbeaten in 13 games, and will play
in the quarter finals of the Midland Senior
Vase for the first time. The goal for the
significantly – as spectators come to watch
some great rugby they learn that there’s a
good community venue available for use
on non-matchdays too.
The next five years will be an exciting
period for Friswell and his
dynamic young squad. The
ambition is palpable
to all club members
and visitors - the
players
want
success. Friswell
and his team have
instilled a belief
and a culture where
promotion to the next
tier is seen as a real possibility
this year and that there is no limit to
the possible progress beyond - proving
that a small community-focussed rugby
club can thrive and sustain itself in this
increasingly physical, competitive and
wonderful game.
“Ambition is infectious and the success
on the field has seen this important community
hub improve its footfall quite significantly”
season remains the same; win everything
possible.
