RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
B
ased on Queen Elizabeth
Walk in London, Barnes
RFC’s first team currently
compete in National League
2 South. They are led by the team of
President Monique Bruce Copp and
Chairman Michael Whitfield and the
club is looking to progress under their
guidance.
Over the years they have put together
a history of which they have every
right to be proud, having officially been
established in the 1920s. One of the most
successful periods of their existence begun
recently when they made it to National
League Two in 2009.
Although they initially only lasted one
season before being relegated they wasted
no time securing their return
as they only lost two
matches all season
46 Issue 59
to return at the first time of asking. They
clinched the Championship that year on
the final day of the season with victory
over Ampthill.
This season, their first team has
made a steady if unspectacular start to
their league campaign, putting together
a record of four wins, a draw and eight
defeats from their thirteen matches. This
sees them lying in the bottom half of the
table with 27 points on the board.
Although they would obviously have
liked to win a couple of extra matches
there have been plenty of positives to take
from their performances. As long as they
can build on these they should be in with
a good chance of pushing on up the table.
This is not a club to focus solely upon
their senior section however and
this is reflected by the
superb youth set
up that they have in place. This part of
the club looks to provide young players
from the local area with an opportunity
to play the game in a safe and enjoyable
environment while helping them to reach
their full potential.
It is important for any club to be able
to produce their own talent if they are
to be successful over a sustained period
particularly in the current financial
climate and this is an area they appear to
have covered. It will certainly be exciting
to see how their juniors can progress
