He recently spoke to Rugby Club Magazine, saying, “My involvement with Nantyglo RFC is due to my friends being involved within the club. I have been a player as well, for other clubs, including Blaena Gwent, Abertillery and Ebbw Vale with my main position being either inside or outside centre. Jason Williams, club coach, has performed wonders with the players and as a company who sponsors the club we like to help out as much as we can. The players, the committee, members and sponsors are just like a group of friends enjoying ourselves together and I find I am very proud to be associated with Nantyglo RFC. I can’t speak highly enough about Sharon for her tireless work in taking care of everyone at the club. Good luck to everyone in the new division next season and congratulations on a great 2014-2015 season!” “One of the biggest challenges for us is the financial side of the game because if that isn’t managed well there will be nowhere for players to play. Managing our injury list has always been a challenge as well whilst I’ve been here but the commitment level has been outstanding and that has helped us overcome the difficulties that we’ve faced. “We’ve got very good people in charge of the club that ensure that it is well managed. We don’t pay players which is a good thing as it’s important to retain our amateur ethos. We’re a great advert for the idea that you can get success without paying for it so long as you build a strong core of players. “There’s a great atmosphere at the club amongst the players and that’s been an important part of what we’ve achieved. The camaraderie at the club makes coaching really easy and the social side of our set up is an important part of what we do here. “It’s the togetherness of the players that has been the key to our success this season; our players never know when they’re beaten. They do need warming up from time to time but they respond excellently to the feedback they’re given and are a great bunch. 38 Issue 54 “We’ve based our approach on hard work. I’ve always hated losing and want to ensure that we do everything we can to compete. The key to that is togetherness and having a strong team ethic; if we play as individuals we’re easy to beat where as if we are a group of 15-20 we will pose teams a tough challenge. “That carries through to our approach to training and if you don’t perform well there you won’t play in matches regardless of your skill level. We work to give players a platform to develop their strengths and improve their weaknesses so that they can reach their full potential. “Obviously financially there’s going to be a cut-off point whereby our current approach will only take us so far. The next league up is a high quality league and we may need to gain funding of some kind to allow for a bigger squad and to cover the extra travel involved. We’re delighted to have secured the title this year and will just look to continue to progress as we have been in recent years; going in the right direction and playing an attractive brand of rugby.”
