It commemorates the anniversary of the Buddha’s first sermon. 12 Aug: Queen’s Birthday: Her Majesty the Queen’s Birthday and is also celebrated as Mother’s Day nationwide. 23 Oct: Chulalongkorn Day: Honouring the passing of a former King of Thailand, King Chulalongkorn (King Rama 5), in 1910. Nov: Loy Kratong: Loi Krathong is a festival that takes place on the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. In the western calendar this usually falls in November. On the night of the full moon, Thais launch their krathong on a river, canal or a pond, making a wish as they do so to pay respect to the water spirits. 5 Dec: King’s Birthday: His Majesty the King’s Birthday and is also celebrated as Father’s Day nationwide. 10 Dec: Constitution Day: Celebrating the promulgation of the Kingdom’s first permanent Constitution in 1932. 31 Dec: New Year’s Eve: The day before the solar and western new year is always a national holiday.
