1. Knit in the front on the next stitch
(as normal), (Fig8a) and then, without
removing the stitch from the left hand
needle, knit into the back (Fig8b), front
(Fig8c), back (Fig8d) and front (Fig8e)
again of the same stitch. You will have
made five stitches from the original one,
(Fig8f).
2. Turn your work so that the WS is facing
and purl these five stitches, (Fig8g).
3. Turn your work again so that the RS is
facing and knit these five stitches, (Fig8h).
4. Repeat steps 2 and twice more, (Fig8i).
5. With the RS facing, lift the second stitch
over the first (in a similar way to casting
off), (Fig8j) and then repeat with the third,
fourth and fifth stitches, one at a time,
so that we have returned to our original
stitch count, (Fig8k).
6. Continue to work the rest of the row as
instructed.
Like cables, smaller bobbles may benefit from being
worked on a fabric of reserve stocking-stitch but
these large, prominent bobbles need no help in
being identified from the main garment.
Fringes also make a welcome appearance using
38
i-cords and a simple, knotted version. Marin Storey’s
“Carmine” and “Falu” both use i-cord fringes but
in different ways. In the former, the fringe is created
at the end of the project, from the picked-up and
knitted stitches of the front bands and collar as part
of the casting-off. The total number of stitches is
worked in groups of three as follows:
1. Knit three stitches onto a double pointed
needle (dpn) and keep the remaining
stitches on the main needle (shown in the
light brown (Fig10a)).
2. Do not turn the dpn. Instead, slide the
three stitches along its length to the
opposite (right hand) end, (Fig10b).
3. Pulling the working yarn tightly across the
back of the work, knit the three stitches
again, (Fig10c).
4. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the i-cord
reaches the desired length, (Fig10d)
5. Cast-off (in this case using a k3tog before
casting-off), (Fig10e), and then repeat the
process on the next three stitches, (Fig10f)
until all stitches have been worked into
the i-cord fringe.
In “Falu”, all of the separate i-cords are knitted
before starting the main body of the project.
Using the same method as described above, three
