Like a band without instruments, stepping is a percussive dance that uses kicks, stomps, claps and chants to create visually and musically exciting rhythms. As the world’ s first professional company devoted to stepping, Washington DC’ s critically acclaimed Step Afrika! brings high energy performance to the stage: a feast for both eyes and ears. Based in Washington, DC, Step Afrika! is DC’ s first and only Cultural Ambassador representing the city and nation at events around the world. The company completes an annual 50-city tour of colleges and theaters from Maine to Mississippi and is a national model for the use of stepping in education, espousing themes such as teamwork, academic achievement and cross-cultural understanding. Step Afrika! is a frequent partner of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Washington Performing Arts Society and has graced some of America’ s most prestigious stages from the White House to Lincoln Center in New York City.
Lakota Sioux Dance Theatre
The Lakota Sioux Dance Theatre was founded at the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota with the support of traditional Lakota Indian educators, healers, community leaders, championship pow-wow dancers, singers and storytellers. The Company performs Cokato Upo! Come to the Center, a three-part, evening-length work that celebrates the culture of the Lakota people. Set against a backdrop of spectacular video imagery and accompanied by live traditional, sacred and courting songs, narratives and creation stories are woven into the fabric of the performance. Special residencies and performances for students are available.
