SANDHILL CRANE
(sp. Grus canadensis)
The Sandhill is only one of two Crane species in all of North America - the other,
being the Whooping Crane. Cranes are
huge birds with wingspans of nearly 7
feet wide. Pictures do not do them justice.
Standing next to one of these monsters,
you’ll feel like you’ve slipped back into
some prehistoric time.
WHOOPING CRANE
(sp. Grus americana)
It’s the most famous bird in our area (along
with its yearly migration to the Aransas
National Wildlife Refuge), and that’s because it’s highly endangered, which is
mostly due to its loss of habitat.
LORE: Their numbers went from tens
of thousands (1600’s & earlier) to only 15
adult Cranes by the year 1938.
OWLS
(sp. var.)
There are several species native to Aransas
County, not the least of which are the Barred
Owl (sp. Strix varia) & the Great Horned
Owl (sp. Bubo virginianus). And when
you’re working late at night, and all is quiet
and calm, and you suddenly hear a, “Hoo,
hoo, hoo...” at your window, it might just
give you the heebie-jeebies.
