CICADA KILLER WASP
(sp. Sphecius grandis)
They’re a Ground Wasp and are mostly
non-agressive, unless they feel their
nest is in jeapardy. Only the female’s
sting injects venom, but the male will
defend the nest from other wasp with
only a barb.
Their nest can have as many as 16
chambers - each with a paralyzed
Cicada for their newly hatched larvae
to feed.
COW KILLER ANT
(sp. Dasymutilla occidentalis)
Also called the Velvet Ant - it’s not
actually an Ant, but rather a large
Ground Wasp. The males have two
pair of black wings, and the females
are wingless. And it’s the females
who will inflict a painful sting if they
are handled, but otherwise, they are
considered non-agressive. They lay
their eggs within the nests of Bumble
Bee larvae, upon which their larvae
feed.
