Yet working on some of the world’ s most significant cars presents a challenge beyond craftsmanship. When a car is one-of-a-kind, there may be little reference for what is correct, making the decision of when to repair, conserve or replace an original component particularly important. Increasingly, the emphasis is on preserving originality wherever possible.
The restoration of the 1924 Hispano-Suiza H6C“ Tulipwood” Torpedo is a case in point. The project involved more than 12,000 hours of painstaking work, research and fabrication, with the team carefully balancing the need to return the car to its original specification with the preservation of surviving original material. The result was Best of Show at Pebble Beach in 2025 – RM Auto Restoration’ s ninth victory at the event.
Behind this work is a multidisciplinary team based in Blenheim, Ontario, with expertise spanning mechanical work, metal fabrication, bodywork, paint, woodworking and upholstery. It is a business where specialist knowledge is passed from one generation to the next, helping ensure that the skills required to preserve these remarkable automobiles are not lost.-
