English Mechanic In 1900 , a magazine called English Mechanic and World of Science and Art was launched , and featured design and construction of cars that could be built at home . The originator was T Hyler White . The series started in May 1899 with a tricycle featuring a 1.75hp De Dion engine . In January 1900 , the first of 56 parts on ‘ A small car and how to build it ’ appeared . To keep costs down , amateur engineers were encouraged to use secondhand materials . Usually the DIY builder then claimed the credit .
Fiat Fiat was incorporated as a company in 1899 , and the name derives from Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino . About 12 3.5hp cars were made in Turin that year . Following that , horizontal twin engines of 4 to 6hp were mounted under the driver ’ s seat of the vis-à-vis bodies . By this time Vincenzo Lancia was working as a driver , and he drove the Fiat entry in the ill-fated 1903 Paris to Madrid Race . In 1901 , 80 8hp cars were made , and by 1903 135 cars built with engines ranging up to 40hp .
Flint Made in Flint , Michigan , USA , by ABC Hardy . In 1902 , he began to make a two-seater , 8hp , single-cylinder Roadster with left- or right-hand tiller steering for $ 850 . He made 52 of these , but ceased in 1902 because he was unwilling to pay the Seldon patent .
Ford Henry Ford started the Ford Motor Company in Detroit , USA in 1903 . The first production car – the Model A – used a two-cylinder horizontally opposed 1645cc engine in a Runabout-type body , and was initially assembled from proprietary parts . By 1904 , it had moved to a new factory making a new design , and by 1905 300 employees were making 25 cars a day . By 1906 , it was making 100 cars a day .
Georges Richard Situated at Ivry-Port , Seine , France , the Richard Company made photographic equipment and then bicycles . In 1901 , Henri Brasier left Mors to join Georges and Max Richard . The Georges Richards of 1903 were a single-cylinder voiturette with 5.5hp , and in 1904 two twins and three fours were in the range , the largest offered being 40hp .
Gillet-Forest Gillet-Forest was founded in 1899 in Saint-Cloud , France ; Fernand Forest was a prolific inventor , the first four stroke engined car was designed by him in 1890 . The first production vehicles were horizontal single cylinder cars of 5 , 9 / 10 and 12 Hp . They ran at boiling point to improve fuel economy and were steam cooled with a distinctive V shaped vertical tubed condenser at the front . Failure to update the design led to their fall in 1907 .
Gladiator The Société Gladiator , Seine , France , was founded by Paul Aucoq and Alexandre Darracq to make bicycles at low cost . Harvey du Cros and Ernest Hooley bought out Gladiator and added light cars to the range . These had a 4hp single-cylinder , rear-mounted engine , but by 1899 the engines were at the front and were Aster units . They had wheel steering and were also sold as Clément because Adolphe Clément was on the board until 1903 . By then , it was making 1000 cars a year , of which 80 percent were sold in England .
Haynes-Apperson Apperson Brothers had premises at Kokomo , Indiana , USA . Elwood Haynes , a talented metallurgist who invented stainless steel , approached them to build his first car . The Haynes-Apperson Company was incorporated in May 1898 . The cars were powered by 5hp engines , and the ‘ heavy parts ’ were made of aluminium alloy .
Gamage Aster Gamage of Holborn , London , England is a famous department store . It offered cars between 1903 and 1904 , both one- and two-cylinder with either a De Dion or Aster engine .
Gasmobile Originally The Automobile Co . of America , Marion , New Jersey . They built the American Voiturette in 1899 Powered by a 3Hp single cylinder engine under the seat and chain drive . They introduced three models of three cylinder cars in 1902 but this overwhelmed the company and they were broke by the end of that year .
