The Chain Bridge is one of the symbolic buildings of Budapest.
The bridge was built in the nineteenth century across the river
Danube to connect Pest with Buda, at the time still separate cities.
The Bridge is named after count István Széchenyi, the driving
force behind the construction of the bridge. After the count missed
his father's funeral when the ferry service across the Danube was
halted due to bad weather, Széchenyi resolved to build a permanent
bridge across the Danube. Near the end of World War II, the Chain
bridge was blown up by the Germans but it was one of the first
structures to be rebuilt after the war, and it reopened in 1949. The
current bridge is an exact copy of the original.
19. yüzyılda iki ayrı şehir olan Buda ve Peşt’i birleştirmek için
Danube nehri üzerine inşa edilmiş olan Zincirli Köprü, Budapeşte’nin sembolik yapılarından biri. Köprü, adını yapılışına vesile
olan İstván Széchenyi’den alıyor. Kötü hava koşullarından dolayı
iptal edilen tekne seferi yüzünden babasının cenazesine katılamayan Kont Széchenyi, Danube nehri üzerine kalıcı bir köprü yaptırmaya karar verir. Zincirli Köprü, 2. Dünya Savaşı’nın sonlarına
doğru Alman askerleri tarafından tamamen yıkılır. Savaş sonrası tekrar inşa edilen ilk yapılardan biri olan köprü, 1949 yılında
yeniden hizmete açılır. Günümüzde kullanılan köprü, ilk yapılan
köprünün birebir kopyasıdır.
