Cherry blossoms are not the only
floral beauty in the land. Wisterias and
hydrangeas with colors ranging from
pinkish purple hues to every shade of blue
cover the gardens and parks. Sunflowers
and red spider lilies grow throughout the
year. People all over the country revel in
celebrating the beauty of nature, not only
the flora but the fauna, too. Big towns are
built in the forest edges, and people never
sever the links between them and nature.
From macaques, to raccoons, to rabbits, to
cats, to fireflies and to deer, the Japanese
love, care and respect the other residents
of this vast island. One stunning example
of this is the Sika Deer which live in the
hills near Nara, one of the oldest towns in
Japan. The Sika Deer regularly leave their
forest and go into the town where they are
welcomed. In Nara there are no wire fences
or cages between you and the beautiful
deer. You’ll see them while walking on the
sidewalk, visiting historical sights or taking
a selfie. If they like you, they’ll even play
with you, but watch out because if they
don’t like you, you might be chased down
the street! The secret to avoiding this is to
build a good relationship with them which
is done through good communication. In
Japan this comes through the respectful
gesture of bowing, whether you are facing
a human or a deer.
