S afe Us age OF PLAYGROUNDS & PARKS It is important that all adults take time to learn about playground safety for the sake of the children - to be properly motivated to protect all children from unnecessary harm and risks in their play. Children should be free to imagine that they are flying on the swing, sliding down a mountain, riding wild animals, balancing like an Olympic gymnast, or climbing to the sky. You can guarantee their freedom to imagine, dream, play, learn, and grow by protecting them, teaching them and supervising them. You can… • • Select the playground equipment they use wisely, instruct children how to use it safely to protect themselves and their playmates. Supervise their play to correct behavior and prevent accidents before they occur. You can help make the playground a safer place by helping children with the following: Climbing Gyms Tell children to… • Use the correct grip. Use fingers and thumbs (lock grip) for climbing and holding. • Use BOTH hands. • Watch carefully when climbing down and avoid those climbing up. • Avoid having too many people using the equipment. Slides Tell children to: • Hold on with both hands as they go up the steps on the slide, taking one step at a time. • Never go up the sliding surface on the frame. • Keep at least one arm's length between children. • Slide down feet first, always sitting up, arms at their sides. • Be sure no one is in front of the slide before sliding down. • Be patient, do not push or shove, and to wait their turn. • Never use a metal slide that has been sitting out in the sun. Swings Tot Swings Reminder to adults... • Always fasten restraining strap. • Don't attempt to put too large a child in too small a swing. • Push gently to avoid violent head movements. • Never leave a small child unattended in a swing. • Remove crying or frightened child from swing. Field Usage Permits Tournaments, Leagues and other Organized Recreational Activities No person may utilize any park facility such as outdoor tennis, softball, baseball or soccer facilities for tournaments, leagues or other activities and outings unless a permit allowing such use or activity has first been obtained. PERMITS for this type of use may only be obtained from the Parks & Recreation Office, Monday-Friday 9 am - 6 pm. No person or organization shall bring or cause to be brought onto park facilities any play class, day camp or similarly organized group or activity of any kind without prior permission. 34 Tell children • • • • • • • to… Sit in center of the swing. Never stand or kneel on swing. Hold on with both hands. Stop the swing before getting off. Walk around a moving swing - not too close to the front or back. Have only one person in a swing at a time. Never swing empty swings or twist chains. Tennis Court Safe Usage Each person using the courts must have an annual tennis permit. Permits are issued for the months April 1 - November 30 of each year. The fee structure for permits shall be as follows: Residents: FREE Non-Res.: $25 Guest: free to residents only; one will be issued to each household Play will be limited to one hour for singles and two hours for doubles. COURT OCCUPANCY will change on the hour. TENNIS SHOES and SUITABLE CLOTHING must be worn at all times. Roller skating/blading, hockey, bicycling, ball playing or any activity other than tennis is not permitted on the tennis courts. TENNIS PERMITS must be posted in the appropriate location at all times.
