SHREWSBURY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
JUNIOR HIGHLIGHTS—TERM 3A
In Term 3a, EY1 children enjoyed a range of activities related to their focus book,
“The Three Little Pigs”. Children were hooked on to the story when we discovered
three piles of rubbish left in our garden left by the pigs. We felt sorry for the pigs and
helped them build their houses. We had so much fun acting out the story especially
after watching the teachers perform for us.
Later on in the term, EY1 were joined by EY2 for a special visit from the farm experts
at 'Farm De Lek'. We fed and stroked the bunny rabbits, hens, pigs, goats and this
year there was even a duck! The adults were so impressed by how kind and consider-
ate all the children were towards the animals; we really remembered our kind hands
throughout the whole visit.
Year 1 visited the Science Centre to support our learning about Space and original
moonwalker, Neil Armstrong. We watched an incredible show in the planetarium and
learnt more about the planets and going into space! There was also the chance to
experience what being an astronaut was like.
Flower Power was Y2’s topic for the first half of term. Children learnt all about the
parts, functions and life-cycle of plants. Children took part in a special workshop
where they created their very own terrranium: a self-contained plant ecosystem that
produces the water that plants within it need to grow. Over the following weeks chil-
dren were able to observe and record the activity in their terraniums, further building
on their knowledge. Good growth mindset guys!
Y3 were learning about Endangered Animals in term 3a. In Literacy, we wrote non-
chronological reports about different endangered animals, which included investiga-
tions into why the animals are endangered. In Topic lessons we learned about the
different categories of threat, and where certain animals are currently ranked in the
conservation scale. In Science we learned about plants and pollination. This included
the importance of bees and how, without them, humans would quickly become en-
dangered too! Class assemblies gave children the chance to share their learning with
the rest of the Prep School and their parents. They also got to show off some serious
style, sporting the t-shirts they made in Art using block printing, complete pictures of
endangered animals and catchy conservation slogans.
Y4 also enjoyed the limelight in term 3a with their very special performance of Dis-
ney’s, The Lion King. The story followed the journey of Simba, the playful lion cub
who tragically loses his Father but who eventually returns to overthrow his evil uncle
Scar and become the rightful King of the savannah. Thanks to all the staff who
helped with the production and to the parents for the brilliant costumes. Most of all,
though, congratulations to the Year 4 children; a star performance from every crea-
ture, and from which they should take great pride!
Towards the end of Term 3a, Year 5 took part in a visit to Shrewsbury’s charity part-
ners at the Mercy Centre and Flat 12 school. The trip is always a valuable insight for
Shrewsbury’s own children into the lives of others, and the ways in which they can
use the advantages of their own position and education to help others. During the
trip, Year 5 learned about the projects supported and run by the Mercy Centre, and
shared snacks and played games with the Mercy Centre children. They also helped
their new friends to learn some basic English - animals, colours, numbers, body parts.
Thanks to everyone who helped to make this such a rewarding day once again.
Year 6 took a trip to the National Science Museum, accompanied by Year 7 helpers
and Senior Science teachers Mr. Albery and Mrs. Edmunds. Children watch a fascinat-
ing show about interactive forces before exploring all the museum’s fascinating ex-
hibits. It was a really fun trip that helped to re-cap on all of our science learning be-
fore our transition to Senior School in August.
