SENIOR HIGHLIGHTS SHREWSBURY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Y11 RESIDENTIAL Blowing off steam after their IGCSE exams, and as preparation for their transition to the Sixth Form, Y11 travelled to Kaeng Krachan Country Club and Resort in June for their annual residential trip. Students were presented with a range of team ac- tivities and challenges over the 3 days, each de- signed to enhance academic, pastoral and social de- velopment; experiences that cemented existing friendships and forged many new ones also. Thanks to Mr. D’Rozario and to the staff that accom- panied the trip, and well done Y11 for their exem- plary efforts after such a demanding year. FROM BANGKOK TO MAEKOK On 16th June, 47 intrepid but blurry-eyed Year 10 Geographers met at the school gates at 04:45am to begin the long trek to Chiang Rai. The final destina- tion was Thaton, a small town in the hills close to the border with Myanmar, but first the group stopped to investigate the urban characteristics of two different areas of Chiang Rai. Having gathered lots of data and after ensuring that refreshments had been taken, the group got back into the minivans and headed for the Maekok Centre, surrounded by rolling hills, rice paddies and gently running streams. Across the week the group splashed around in rivers to investigate how channel characteristics change, visited a working tangerine farm to examine it as a system, went up into the primary rainforest to col- lect microclimate data and trekked into the hills to examine how the Akha Hill Tribe practice slash and burn agriculture. The week was a great success, and the pupils worked hard in the field and classroom but also made the most of their downtime to enjoy each other’s company away from school. PAGE 19
