30 MITIGATING RISK IN A GIG ECONOMY
I have seen small businesses fail for two reasons: they do not grow fast
enough, or they grow too fast. It always seems odd that growing too fast
can be an issue. However, it is easy to get a false sense of security when
things are going well and business owners assume it will always be that way.
Business owners can also become complacent about investing in necessary
infrastructure, technology, and their employees, which puts the business
in a mode of making reactionary decisions rather than proactive decisions
that allow businesses to plan and budget properly. It is hard for many of us
to be willing to change, especially when we have seen success in the past.
To combat this complacency, I am a firm believer in lifelong learning—
both for businesses and individuals. It is essential to be alert to
changes in the economy, specific industries, and the world in general.
I rely on a handful of reliable resources to provide this information
to me on a regular basis. My goal is to have Nesbit Agencies Risk &
Business Magazine be one of those important resources for you.
So what are the changes small businesses should make today to position
themselves for continued success in the future? A lot has to do with changing
demographics. As people are living longer, careers are extended beyond
what has typically been the standard retirement in the past. Meanwhile,
younger people moving into the workforce need to have different skill
sets than in the past to be able to fill available positions and adapt to a
rapidly changing economy. And across all age groups, there is increased
growth in freelance work, which requires both workers and employers
to make adjustments in order to benefit from these arrangements.
In the Winter 2018 issue of Nesbit Agencies Risk & Business Magazine, we have
included articles related to some of these current issues, like insurance for
freelance workers and contractors in the gig economy, and considerations for
retirement-age employees in selecting Medicare over their employer’s group
health plan. We also feature some of our diverse clients: one runs a fitness
center, another is an HR service provider. At Nesbit Agencies, we have the
expertise to help a wide range of businesses with all their insurance needs.
We appreciate the opportunity to share this valuable information
with you through our Risk & Business Magazine. If you’d like more
information on any of the topics or businesses featured in this issue,
we would love to hear from you. You can provide us with feedback
by sending any inquiries or comments to [email protected].
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Jay Nesbit, Operations
