WINTER SAFETY

WINTER SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS

The changes in winter weather

can change a lot more than just the foliage outside and the clothes you wear every day . It also brings dramatic temperature changes that can affect your vehicles and other mechanical equipment . Whether it is the dangerous driving conditions or the increased wear on the vehicle , having the right tools and options in place are essential to remaining safe throughout the season .
WHAT WEST BEND RECOMMENDS BEFORE THE WEATHER HITS
What a person does to protect their vehicle before the winter weather actually comes in full force can be just as if not more important than what is done during the season itself . Here are some tips to make the most of the time before the cold really sets in :
• Install winter tires on your vehicles . While these tires can be a significant financial investment , the amount they will save you over time is worth the extra cost . The extra grip allows for better braking and steering . They also allow you to get going without having to worry about sliding around during stop-and-go traffic situations .
• Purchase touch-up paint . Cold temperatures can make repairs for scratches or chips more difficult to do , but it is an essential component of winter maintenance . Bare metal will corrode extremely quickly , so applying some quick touch-up paint to prevent that is a simple way to ensure you can still drive around safely before making more permanent repairs .
• Apply Rain-X 2-in-1 Glass Cleaner + Rain Repellant as a rain and snow repellent . It will not only clean the windshield but it will also ensure that water beads up and makes your wipers work better .
Another thing to keep in mind is the possibility that you could become trapped in your car during a winter storm . It is important to make a checklist of items to keep in your trunk or elsewhere in your vehicle as measure of safety in that situation :
• A shovel is a great item to have . When you become stranded , removing the snow from the area around your car is important , especially the area around the exhaust pipe . If the exhaust cannot escape , you run the risk of carbon monoxide building up inside the vehicle .
• Tow chains or some sort of rope are also important to have . While roadside assistance is offered with West Bend policies for a small fee ( as with most agencies ), the chances of tow trucks not being available during winter storms are much higher . If you have tow chains in your vehicle , you are more likely to be able to get help from another driver ( if they are willing ).
• Essentials such as food , water , and medication . Nonperishable items such as energy bars , nuts , and water are great to have .
• Emergency equipment like flares , reflectors , and flashlights .
• Candles and matches . Even a small bit of heat can be a lifesaver when trapped during a winter storm .
