26 FIRE SAFETY CHECKLIST - RESIDENTIAL
Welcome to the summer edition of Risk & Business Magazine.
In this publication, we have chosen to focus on fire and
fire prevention as fire is the second leading cause of all
insurance claims in Canada. Water claims continue to lead
the way in number, but while water damage can be costly
and inconvenient, fire losses almost always result in someone
being displaced from their home or business.
Virtually every home insurance policy covers damage caused
by fire and damage to vehicles from fire or water is usually
covered if comprehensive or all perils coverage car insurance
was purchased.
Because fire remains a big concern, how close your home is to
a fire hydrant or fire station can have a huge impact on your
insurance premium. When it comes to commercial risks, the
type of businesses you have for neighbours also affects an
insurance company’s desire to insure you.
Fire prevention is not something that requires deep pockets
or a lot of time. We’ve included some checklists and things
to consider provided by Kincardine Fire Chief Kent Padfield.
We’re sure you will find them useful. We also encourage you
to reach out to your local fire department as many of them
have risk assessment programs and would much rather have
a discussion with you about preventing a fire at your farm or
business than have to see you at a fire call.
Contact any of our experienced professionals for advice and
counsel on insurance and risk-management related matters.
We are also happy to provide a no-obligation review and
audit of your risk-management program.
Sincerely,
