Volunteering / Community service: I’ ve enjoyed participating in the Envirokids program at the Clinton Sawmill Museum. Envirokids is a summer program targeted at getting kids involved in local outdoor activities. Shameless plug, if you have kids and need them out of the house, come see some cool science experiments this summer! The best way for me to inspire the next wave of problem solvers is to get them interested. Observing the formation of gasses from the classic coke and mentos chemical reaction or a color changing dime from a redox reaction, I hope to have them start asking the“ why” to begin understanding how the world works. As a farm kid, I recall tinkering on carburetors from a very young age. Hands on activities like this promote critical thinking and ignite the spark of curiosity on how things work. Shocking how I ended up as an engineer, right?
Favorite aspect of living in Clinton: Personally, I’ ve experienced life in the metropolis around Memphis, TN, Houston, TX, Atlanta, GA, and Columbus, OH. And it wasn’ t for me. I enjoy Clinton because it is a smaller city with deep manufacturing roots. Without knowing a single person in the state of Iowa, I moved out here straight out of college and was struck by the friendliness of those I have met. I’ ve spent time playing volleyball, basketball, darts, bags, river days, music concerts, and farming with the numerous friendships I have made in very short order. I also cherish the ability to drive 15 minutes to work without any fear of 5 o’ clock bumper to bumper traffic. Trust me, been there done that! And shopping and entertainment are just as easy to find with a balance of big box department and hardware stores, small town dives, and chain restaurants.
Favorite activity in Clinton: Morel mushroom hunting( but I won’ t tell where!). One year back in the woods of Georgia we landed on the motherload, and nearly 7 years passed until I once again feasted upon the delicacy of the woods. The small town vibe allows for plenty of outdoor activities with various parks and naturally the riverfront.
Best career advice you received and that you have to give: In regards to the best career advice I have both received and would like to share with others, I was instilled from a young age to never say,“ That’ s not my job”. However, this should be elaborated on before we all run off and start designing rockets for NASA. The intent behind the quote is to live with a mindset that fosters accountability and ownership. You will quite literally stand apart from the crowd by diving into things that“ aren’ t your job” and you will learn so much in the process even as a helper. Courage and initiative to tackle that difficult presentation or report or responding to an incident in someone else’ s assigned area will earn the respect of your boss and your colleagues. Worst case scenario, you gained the experience and you’ ll never need to do that job again.

Favorite aspect of living in Clinton: The small town feeling and the way we work together as a community. The amount of support given to small businesses is such a blessing.
Favorite memory of Clinton: Riverboat Days was always a blast as a kid!
Best career advice you received and that you have to give: The best career advice I have received is " If you go to work on your goals, your goals will go to work on you." The best career advice I have to give is " Consistency is the key to success!"
