This is en- forced from a management level, with the organisation also having its very own health and safety department to ensure that prop- er training, guidance, and on-site manage- ment is maintained at all times. The organisation’s focus on health and safety is backed up by modern approaches to communication, data collection and man- agement, but also through the development of a strong safety culture. As part of this, the organisation maintains comprehensive records on both its own employees as well as projects, with the employees themselves heavily integrated in this process via mobile technology. Then recognising the human element, the organisation is attempting to share excellence and a positive approach to safety between the more experienced members of the team and those newer to the business to foster a strong culture to enforce this. Richardson Roofing also takes environ- 146 mental concerns very seriously. On-site, the organisation has been looking to drive recycling and salvaging techniques to try and develop resource utilisation and sus- tainability initiatives across a number of its projects. This is supported further from an internal operations perspective, with the organisation also pursuing environmentally friendly measures across many of the com- pany’s vehicles (pushing hybrid vehicles where possible) and in encouraging a very environmentally friendly approach to busi- ness across the company. The organisation’s focus on the envi- ronment has also been showcased in the prominent Heathrow Vortex project, with Richardson Roofing undertaking a vast amount of roofing work across the con- tract. Its increased awareness towards the environment and sustainability proved instrumental in maintaining the work with Heathrow, which is placing an increased im- portance and emphasis on such matters as BUILDING DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION MAGAZINE seen with Heathrow 2.0. The sheer volume within the contract has also been utilised by the organisation to immerse the younger members of its team in projects which re- quire a noteworthy focus on both safety and the environment. Going forward, Richardson Roofing has clear ambitions to grow the business, but also looks to develop its position in the market. Given the large amount of exper- tise which the organisation has developed over the years, the company now looks to use its increased size and this knowledge to position itself as a principal contractor within the market and offer an increasing- ly comprehensive and expert-led service to the construction industry. That said, the company is adamant not to rush growth and, instead, focus on sus- tainable growth, regarding which George Richardson commented: “If you’re in man- ufacturing, if you double your turnover then you might double your money.
