Meet Terry Baker Mulligan: Author
Here's another inside peek into the life of one of our experts who is impacting her world! Terry is a former teacher, a mother, wife, and award winning author who grew up in Harlem, and has traveled on five continents. As an award winning author and happily married mother with two sons, she has also been privileged to travel widely. In a number of ways her life has been unusual and she shares these experiences in my writing. She says that the goal is to entertain, but she also educate readers about the importance of traveling to learn about people and places
in the world that they might not know about. Let's hear a bit more about her passion AND her latest book...
~Share something you are passionate about:
I am passionate about education and travel. Because it exposes us to knowledge and world experiences which bring people together, fostering peace, understanding, and personal satisfaction.
~What are some ways you are helping to bring this forward in the world?
In different ways my two nonfiction books tell of my growing up in Harlem. In seventh grade my mother sacrificed to send me to a new school, where I was exposed to life’s endless possibilities. Later, during junior year of college, Mom urged me to study abroad. In my books and talks people see how I have positively interacted with people from different countries, ethnicities and ways of life. It breaks down barriers and builds friendship. My sons took this philosophy to extremes in their travels. It’s possible to travel without breaking the bank. You can host an AFS student, or be one; join a group like Cultural Leadership; go on a church mission trip, etc., etc.
~Describe something our readers today can look forward to discovering in your book, These Boys are Killing Me - Travels and Travails with Sons Who Take Risks:
In 2001 and 2003, my two sons backpacked separately and alone through 34 countries-- without cellphones. I worried constantly, but they emailed when they could to reassure me they were safe. The book is a travel memoir about their adventures. My eldest son saw a peaceful, more connected world that in many places has since disappeared and/or been destroyed by war. The book also touches on the adolescent brain and the special challenges to raising boys to engage in risky behavior.
~What are 1-3 tips you can give our reader today to help them step forward in their life powerfully?
1. Believe (faith is everything).
2. Stay in action (never stop working on
your dreams & goals.
3. PUSH (PRAY UNTIL SOMETHING
HAPPENS).
~Will you share a client success story?
I have a mentee who loves to sew clothes and sell them because it is her passion. We sat down and devised some SMART goals, designed her website and logo in a 24 hour period.
~What tip or piece of advice can you share with our reader today to empower them to SHINE?
When possible meditate and pray before, during, and after every life event. Get into a routine that will help your mind stay clear and your energy soar. truggle in life…. BUT we can also strive, work hard, break through, rise and achieve. It takes the internal ‘want’, the mental ‘grit’, the necessary ‘continuity’ and ‘follow-through’ and then we arrive at ‘accomplishments’ and ‘success’. With all that is there for us…. Why wouldn’t we want to get better? Live a more peaceful life? If we know that we can go from existing to thriving…. It would be such a shame to stay stuck, wouldn’t it?
~Any final thought, share, or idea that you would like to share with our readers today?
My final thought is for your readers to not only get the book for themselves, but also for those friends and loved ones who are going through tough times. Please have them read the whole book. You know that they’re not going to hear your advice because you’re ‘mom’/’sis’/ ‘bf’… This book gives them the words, the learnings and the advice their minds and their hearts need to hear without you being the bad guys. It will guide your friends and loved ones through the difficult times in life and all you have to do is complement them on how far they’ve come!
