THE REVOLUTIONARY
HISTORY
I
n October we looked at the ‘Gospel’ and
what it means for us and for those around
us. It was one of our many exciting teaching
topics this year, and this article is a short
reminder of what we hope you learned.
What does revolution mean?
A forcible overthrow of a government or
social order, in favour of a new system.
Before we were saved, sin ruled our lives in
ways we could not imagine, leading us to do
things that in retrospect we would not participate
in. The word of God even says, “The one who
practices sin [separating himself from God,
and offending Him by acts of disobedience,
indifference, or rebellion] is of the devil [and takes
his inner character and moral values from him,
not God]; for the devil has sinned and violated
God’s law from the beginning.” 1 John 3:8 (AMP).
This goes to show how the power of sin impacts
our lives so that we took on similar character
and moral values of the devil.
In the earthly realm (aka Earth), a revolution
begins when people are oppressed by a system
that threatens or affects their well being. We have
seen uprisings in different parts of the world that
constitute to revolutions. Similarly, in a spiritual
context, the rule of sin in our lives bring us into
its oppression. In 1 John 3:8 we even notice the
power of sin has an element where it defines our
identity as a person though we may not see
it as such.
“… The reason the Son of God appeared was to
destroy the works of the devil.” 1 John 3:8 (ESV)

What’s Happening: November
There’s great news! Though sin brings oppression,
there’s a revolution that Jesus brings through the
Holy Spirit in our lives, and that’s freedom – not
for a moment but for eternity! This revolution is so
powerful that even our identity is changed into the
likeness of Jesus day by day. When we say to the
Lord, ‘I want you to be the Saviour and Lord of my
life’ he comes to our rescue and overthrows the
government of the devil and sets a new government
in our lives. A government where Jesus is King and
we become his citizens and enjoy the fruits of his
work on the cross!
Your history before was tainted with sin and
sorrows from your past in connection to the rule
of the devil. However, the moment you believe in
Jesus, a new history begins to be written that does
not include your past but a praise report of what
Jesus has set you free from and the new life he
has brought you into. Similar to how sin defines
the character of an individual, the Holy Spirit in
us defines our identity by making us sons and
daughters of God (see Romans 8:15-16).
