Edith with her Cell
My first daughter Victory, is 23 years old. In May
2015 shortly after her 22nd birthday she developed
symptoms of a cold. We didn’t think much of it
because we assumed it would clear up with time.
Victory has always been a healthy child and had
never spent a night in hospital. Two weeks after the
initial symptoms appeared, she was still feeling unwell
so she went to the GP. The doctor told us that she
had vertigo and gave her some tablets and said it
would clear up. With each passing day the symptoms
increased and the following week we went to A&E at
North Middlesex Hospital. The doctor there told us
the same thing and gave her more medication.
By this time she was vomiting and she felt like the
room was spinning so much that she couldn’t stand
up. We gave the medication a chance to work and
hoped and prayed she would get better. Five times
we had been to the doctor between May and early
July. By the time I came back from a trip at the end of
July Victory had still not recovered. We went back to
the GP and I insisted on getting a specialist referral
and this time the doctor said she had an ear infection.

August and got home around 8pm. As I got home my
daughter’s face was drooping on one side. We called
the emergency services and I thought she’d had a
stroke but her blood pressure was normal. As we left
for the hospital that night, little did I know how we
were not going to be back home for some time!
Victory in hospital
For the first 2 weeks in the hospital I watched every
day as her health diminished, hoping that she would
start to feel better. I felt heartbroken the moment I
realized that this was way more than I had imagined;
Victory could no longer talk or see, feed herself,
stand or walk. She was unable to swallow so they put
