Research results of South American countries published in worldindexed journals : An international comparison

Dear researchers , in this opportunity the Revista Scientific ( e-ISSN : 2542-2987 ), is proud to present the editorial of the edition volume 4 , number 12 , related to an interesting topic , generated from the research process , on the results of the research in the countries of South America , where the in crescendo of scientific articles in high-impact peer-reviewed journals is demonstrated , especially in Ecuador .
Introduction
The objective of this study is to present the research results published in scientific journals from South American countries and compare them with published research results from North American and Western European countries . For this reason , publications and journals of SJR ( Scimago Journal of Rank ) have been selected , which is an impact index based on the Scopus database . The base of scientific journals of Scimago was chosen since it is an international base of 24385 journals that use processes and strict criteria to guarantee the quality of the same .
Methodology
The Scimago database was used to compare scientific production by country between 1996 and 2017 ( Scimago Journal and Country Rank , 2019 ) and the exchange rate by country was calculated ( ILPES / CEPAL , 2010 ). Then the publications by country in Scimago were calculated in relation to its population ( World Bank , 2017 ). Finally , the number of journals per country in relation to its population is presented .
